Fashion is on the crest of a new 'femimen' trend, writes Janice Breen Burns

Andrej Pejic is a slender, spectacularly beautiful blond, a softly spoken 19-year-old from Broadmeadows whose prospects in modelling, just a few years ago, would have been negligible. His ''look'' is the effeminate opposite of the lean, handsome, muscle-ripped male models more typically cast for ad campaigns and fashion runways since the late 1980s.

But, 18 months ago, Matthew Anderson, director of Chadwick Models in Melbourne, recognised a flicker of the future in Pejic. ''His beauty,'' he says, ''was extraordinary. He's also intelligent and it's amazing, really, that he survived growing up in Broadmeadows, that he's just so comfortable in his own skin.''

At the time, Blind Freddy could predict that, as a model, Pejic would not be cast to sell jackhammers or Y-fronts. But, Anderson recognised instantly that Pejic's ''femiman'' look was so jarringly feminine, so shockingly beautiful, it would intrigue fashion's most creative photographers, producers and editors. ''He probably wasn't going to be commercial,'' Anderson recalls. ''But it was a look that was really exciting, very interesting, very high fashion.''

There was an initial flurry of local interest in Pejic, including his walking in Melbourne's Spring Fashion Week shows, which the teenager juggled with VCE study. Anderson then packed him off to London, then Paris, then Tokyo, to test his theory. ''Andrej was definitely a calculated risk; we really weren't sure how it would work out. In the global financial crisis, a lot of commercial decisions were being made above creative ones and that meant the strong man, Chesty Bond-types were more likely to work.''

Pejic, however, was greeted with a certain joy. ''The photographers seemed to like my look,'' he says. ''They talked about the extreme androgyny and commented a lot on how thin I am.'' Since leaving his mother, brother and Broadmeadows home last February, Pejic admits he has lost weight, a fact that only intensified his angular beauty and appeal to stylists, who promptly plucked his eyebrows into elegant arcs, ran trails of shadow over his lids, straightened or waved his mane of pale hair and added a slick of lip colour or gloss to his soft, pillow lips.

''I don't mind that; I was happy with that look because I was always experimenting with it, even before I started modelling,'' he says. ''There are a lot of boys who look like me in the fashion industry, but they're not prepared to have it made intense like that.''

Pejic resolved to be one of the few who would, and it has paid off. He is feted on industry websites, including Japan's Vogue Hommes as modelling's ''one to watch''. During the menswear season in Paris in June, he walked in shows for Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Raf Simmons, among others. He says his appearance caused a fascinating unease.

''At first everyone thought there must be a blonde girl doing all the men's shows,'' he laughs. ''They asked Raf Simmons if he was doing women's wear now. They figured it out eventually.''

After Paris, the commissions accelerated. Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld, renowned for her razor radar, cast and styled Pejic for a spread in her August issue based on transsexual icons.

''Kate Moss dropped into that shoot,'' Pejic says casually, ''She said how beautiful everything was, and jumped around a bit.'' Later, Pejic was cast for an Arena Homme Plus editorial, then by Italian Vogue for its November issue, a spread called ''Venus in Furs'' shot by Steven Meisel and featuring two other ''femimen'' models, and by Turkish Vogue for a 16-page spread, ''Androjen''. Fashion blogger Patty Huntington, of Frockwriter.com.au, says Pejic's body of work, particularly his commissions for three Vogue mastheads, is probably unique.

''[I] can't think of any other time that a new Australian model has been so heavily showcased in multiple international editions of the world's best-known fashion magazine brand in such a short space of time,'' she wrote.

Matthew Anderson believes it is simply that Pejic, and another promising model he recently signed with an equally strong ''femiman'' look, James Varley, 21, have materialised at a tipping point in the global fashion Zeitgeist. ''Society and cultural values have changed, are changing,'' Anderson says. ''People - young, particularly - are more accepting of all kinds of sexuality and ways of life. It reminds me of the 1980s, when ambiguous sexuality was accepted and people weren't ashamed to show it and sell it.''

For Varley, the fast-talking, highly creative Melbourne University science student tipped by Anderson to follow a career trajectory similar to Pejic's, the rising relevance of ''femimen'' is also about a global groundswell of yearning and hope among his generation. ''What's androgyny? It's the middle ground. It's halfway,'' he says. ''It's unity, but still with individuality.'' He plans to waive his studies and filmmaking, if he has to, for a semester, a year, or more, to cash in on his evocative boy/girl beauty, hopefully in London and Paris.

''I'd like to do what Andrej's done,'' he says. ''I'm more of a rock dude myself; I've even got a bad teenage beard at the moment, but I'm shaving it all off for the androgynous look.''

Black Student Association gives annual fashion show a makeover

Now in its 42 year, The University of Memphis Black Student Association's fashion show, dubbed "Fashion's Changing Forever," is back tonight in the University Center ballroom at 7. Tickets are $10 at the door.More than 50 models donning fashion forward threads look out from sepia-toned photographs. It could be 1974, or it could be today.

Jasmine Hockett, chair member of the fashion show and senior broadcasting major, said this year's event is "definitely something The University has never seen before."

"Instead of getting a normal student production, they're getting New York Fashion Week in Memphis," she said. "I want students and student leaders to see that they're capable of doing great things if they put the energy into it."

Clarence Simpson, co-chair and communications and fine arts senior, said the elaborate show has been in planning stages since June.

Though there are still 300 tickets left, twenty VIP tables and 438 tickets have been sold so far this semester, Simpson said.

He said the committee's goal was to be as diverse as possible with the clothes and models in the show, with styles ranging from hippie and vintage to Memphis State University and Ivy League throwbacks.

"In the past, the show hasn't been this extravagant," he said. "Students can expect a lot of choreography and a very mature atmosphere."

President of BSA and senior marketing management major Mykila Cobb said she's looking forward to the show she's spent late nights and early mornings helping prepare.

"People think it's easy (getting together a show)," she said. "But they just see the end product. It takes time to get together."

She said when she started helping plan the show, she wanted everyone involved to get a "full experience."

This year, the 10-member board of the production brought in local and national sponsors including Reflections Modeling Agency, ReadyU and CoverGirl Cosmetics.

Hockett said Reflections trained all 53 BSA models and introduced them to professional opportunities in print and commercial modeling while ReadyU donated laundry detergent, Old Spice, Venus Razors and money. CoverGirl also contributed monetary donations as well as marketing material and makeup.

"We owe it to the committee, models and sponsors because honestly, if it were not for them there would be no show," she said.

Cobb encouraged fans to come out early to secure a seat. She said BSA is open to students of all races and backgrounds and that the show incorporates all walks of campus life and style.

"A lot of times we see differences before we see similarities," she said. "It's always good to support everyone's style because everyone's different."

Jewelry Making at Camp Fenton Fallon

Last night Dana Lorenz of Fenton Fallon dumped out her precious craft box to let fashion bloggers have a go at creating their own Fenton Fallon-ish necklaces.

The tables were lined with all the bits and baubles that go into making that one-of-a-kind Fenton Fallon jewelry we love: heavy strips of chain in neon colors, fat strands of pearls, scraps of rhinestone costume jewelry, and much much more. It was overwhelming. Luckily there were martinis on hand (because there’s nothing like a martini for making working with tiny jewelry pliers easier).

Lorenz gave a brief tutorial and then left us to our own devices (though she was on hand to offer help). I was pleased with my necklace but it was no Fenton Fallon. And excluding P.S. I Made This’s Erica Domesek, who confessed that she was taking the materials home so she could perfect her necklace, everyone seemed a little flummoxed. Even when you’ve got all the materials to recreate a Fenton Fallon masterpiece, it’s pretty hard to replicate the real thing.

The high-fashion arts and crafts sesh left us with a newfound respect for Lorenz’s creative genius. We’ll keep on blogging and leave the linking and plier-ing and crafting to her.

The double big tops were a fitting symbol for Boss, by far the most important luxury brand in Europe's biggest economy. Completely white outside, the two tents were entirely black in their interiors, aptly so since the large crowd had gathered to witness the spring 2011 collection of Boss Black, the house's top line, featuring both men and women on the enormous catwalk. And, in a curious example of symmetry, the show marked the first by Boss Black's new creative consultant Graeme Black, who previously worked for Giorgio Armani prior to launching his own signature label in London.

The models rolled out in a collection where, at least for women, the key was fluid use of volume. Using a print-free choice of fabrics and focusing on soft mono-color hues like coral, beige and cobalt, the collection largely waved aside recent global runway seasons, which have been dominated by floral and abstract prints.

What worked best were the Japanese style pants in subtle checks, volume and dimpled skirts, and long, sinuous caftans.

"To my mind, Boss creates clothes that flatter a lady. This collection certainly does," said Jessica Alba, the American actress on something of a European fashion tour. On Monday, she sat front-row at Christian Dior and on Tuesday attended Chanel, both in Paris, then winged into Berlin for this huge event.

For guys, Boss Black wants to see them next spring in a newly proportioned suit. Cut with a short jacket and large back vents, yet also with large shoulders and forgiving pants, the look played with the modern micro jacket, yet gave it a more plausibly commercial twist. Made in some great powder blue seersucker, and off-the-moment ginghams, the choice was conventional but also cool.

Post-show, Boss wined and dined its guests in the second charmingly lit marquee, in rough-hewn tables placed around old olive trees.

Predictable: Katy Perry goes for a garish neeon print

The high street is best known for its ability to replicate fresh-off-the catwalk trends at an expeditious pace. With this in mind, the fact that “festival fashion” — or rather, what the clothes retailers deem suitable attire for a weekend spent watching bands while sipping warm cider — has barely evolved in the past few years makes no sense whatsoever.

But take a wander into any store on Oxford Street and you'll see them: the straw trilby hats circa June 2005, the garishly printed maxi-dresses, the “vintage-effect” denim waistcoats, and a host of cheap-looking neon sunglasses in a style Sienna Miller sported three years ago.

In fact, so littered are the shops with this tatty paraphernalia that it's little wonder the festival field, once a stomping ground of accidental trend-setters and crazily dressed hippies, is now home to clones wearing nothing more exciting than Kate Moss's latest collection for Topshop.

And while festival trends are clearly stuck on a loop as far as the average Glastonbury-goer is concerned, the celebrity attendees at this year's festivals have done little to spur things on.

Beyoncé, who is most at home in a Versace minidress, looked more Peaches Geldof on a bad day than glamorous songstress when she turned up at LA's Coachella festival in a leather mini-skirt and plaited head band.

Meanwhile model Agyness Deyn and Pixie Geldof worked the same grungy oversized shirt and shorts combo they channel every year.

Even Kate Moss, the Great Dame of festival attire, looked nice but boring at last week's Isle of Wight Festival in a pair of denim shorts and a waistcoat that did little to suggest her style had moved on much since her Glastonbury heyday.

Thankfully, for anyone seeking inspiration for their festival wardrobe this year, there are exceptions. Teaming her quilted bag with a butterfly-detailed sweater and simple black boots, Alexa Chung looked both fashion forward and elegant at the Isle of Wight Festival, while Florence Welch stood out from the crowd in a quirky prom-style minidress and fringed leather jacket.

Mel C, a relative stranger to best-dressed lists, surprised us with her chic, pared-down utility look, while model Erin O'Connor injected sparkle into the proceedings thanks to a sequined sweater.

For anyone heading off to Glastonbury tomorrow, a word of advice: while it is, of course, important that you consider the practical elements involved in dressing for a festival — namely, that you'll need something to shield you from the rain — the best looks are never the ones that were designed with a muddy field in mind.

In short, avoid anything the high street calls “festival fashion” and you'll be off to a flying start.

Lovely bones are back on the catwalk

Bones are back on the catwalk. But the new breed of bootylicious bombshells storming the fashion world don't need to fret about the return of the ultra-waif. For designers' love affair with the skeletal is moving beyond the clothes horses to the clothes and accessories themselves.

Spine-heeled shoes stole the show at DSquared, while the last collection of the late Alexander McQueen is littered with skulls. Australian label Sass & Bide also has T-shirts with a hand-painted ribcage print.

And the famous seem equally enamoured with all things osseous-inspired.

When pregnant pop star Alicia Keys performed at the World Cup opening ceremony in South Africa, she had DSquared's spine-heeled super-platforms on her feet. She was so impressed by the shoes that she posted a picture of herself wearing the pair on Twitter for her fans.

Singer Ciara also donned the label's spine stilettos for a recent awards ceremony in the US.

At their catwalk show in Milan, DSquared design duo Dean and Dan Caten sent the models out in thigh-high boot versions. But the spine heels, which go on sale in mid-September priced at £830, will come in the more wearable ankle-strap platforms and ankle boots styles.

However, it is in the jewellery world where the cadaverous has captured most imaginations, with bones, skulls, claws and talons all acting as artistic inspirations.

“The skull, in particular, has a great history in jewellery,” says Stephen Webster, who counts Madonna as a customer and is a leader of jewellery's darker movement. “Starting with the memento mori from medieval times, this death motif keeps coming back, but it is always reinvented.”

Webster says that one of the best-sellers in his men's collection this year — which has the theme “No Regrets” — is an intricate skull ring which he describes as “like a Mexican Day of the Dead skull”, more celebratory than ghoulish.

He believes that the skull has now been welcomed into the mainstream. “It used to be very rock 'n' roll, all Keith Richards and Hells Angels. It put you out as a renegade, rebellious, almost outside the law. It doesn't stand for that any more.”

Evidence of this wider appeal comes from the success of McQueen's skull designs. The scarf, in particular, has gained a huge following, with Olsen twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, Sienna Miller and Russell Brand all snapping one up, as well as vast numbers of Londoners. The scarf even appeared in camp teen TV show Glee, surely the ultimate reflection of its broad appeal.

Like Webster, Clerkenwell-based jewellery designer Jessica McCormack cites memento mori — reminders that life is short — as an influence.
The 30-year-old New Zealander, who is surprisingly chatty for someone with an obvious fascination with the darker side, says that she is inspired by mourning jewellery from the Victorian era. Her designs include diamond jointed earrings modelled on birds' bones, which she collects from natural history museums.

“I think the bone pieces really articulate a mood: they're gothic but still pretty and delicate as well,” says McCormack.

Dominic Jones, whose jewellery workshop is near McCormack's in Clerkenwell, is one of the up-and-coming talents of the jewellery world. The 25-year-old's designs, cast in brass with double-plated gold, include claw knuckle-duster rings and fang earrings.

Jones says his main inspiration is nature: “Nothing man could design could quite match the natural world in elegance,” he explains.

His business partner is the model Alice Dellal, while fans include Orlando Weeks, the lead singer of the Maccabees. And retail guru Mary Portas wore one of his rings on Mary Queen of Shops recently, prompting — he says — “about a hundred text messages” from excited friends who had spotted his design. They pore over ballerina-inspired dresses and coats with tiny corseted bodices, large sleeves, antique lace and delicate embroidery — the handiwork of Worth's new designer, Giovanni Bedin.

With a price tag of £6,000, you can imagine heiress Daphne Guinness or actresses Eva Green and Freida Pinto in these mini-tutus with thigh-high leather boots, slimline trousers or over-a-red-carpet evening skirt. The rest of us will have to wait for the launch of the Worth ready-to-wear spring collection (ranging in price from £200 to £2,000) available from the end of February 2011. It's very hush-hush, but Browns will be stocking the collection initially.

Although the Worth perfume brand continued, the fashion house closed in 1956, after its acquisition by its former arch-rival, Maison Paquin. But now Worth is back. There will be a stand-alone store in Paris (probably on the site of Charles Frederick Worth's old shop on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré), and another one in London.

Mention Worth to fashion followers and they go into ecstasies. British-born Charles Frederick was the father of haute couture: the first designer to sew personal labels into bespoke garments, the first to prepare a collection in advance, and the first to display his wares using live models (making him the inventor of the modern catwalk). Born in 1826, he was apprenticed as a draper in London, at Swan and Edgar. At the age of 21, he set out to find his fortune at Maison Gagelin in Paris. Among his innovations was the introduction of ready-made muslin dress samples, from which patrons could choose a style.

At Gagelin, Worth met Marie Vernet, a house model, whom he married in 1851. His designs were featured at the Great Exhibition in London, where they won a gold medal. In 1857, he started his own company.

As Haussmann was designing what became the “grands boulevards” of Paris, Worth was designing the art that became haute couture. Both were products of an era of conspicuous consumption. Worth popularised sumptuous crinolined gowns and bustles. His clients included Empress Eugénie, consort of Napoleon III, and the actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Today, his dresses form part of major collections in Europe and the States. The current Yves Saint Laurent show at the Petit Palais in Paris demonstrates just how much Worth's designs paved the way for future stars such as Hubert de Givenchy and Saint Laurent.

When Worth died in 1895, his two French-born sons took over the business. In 1932, they turned their father's perfume, Je Reviens, into a hugely successful brand. In its blue skyscraper bottle, it became a gift favoured by Second World War soldiers for their sweethearts.

A few years ago, British entrepreneur Martin McCarthy purchased the intellectual property to the label. Now, he and business partner Dilesh Mehta (CEO of Shaneel Enterprises, which manufactures and distributes brands worldwide) have reunited the clothes and perfume.

The entrepreneurs have brought in Giovanni Bedin, 35 — who has worked with Karl Lagerfeld and Thierry Mugler — to create modern pieces inspired by Worth's style. “It's a severe line with a very, very feminine inside,” Bedin tells me, revealing layers of hand-crafted petticoats. “We worked a lot on big shoulders and tiny waists. But it's adjustable because all the materials are stretchy.”

For McCarthy, the designer is an obsession. He grew up in Worth's birthplace, Bourne, in Lincolnshire — “Worth influenced my whole career.” For the past 15 years, McCarthy — who has worked at Gianfranco Ferré, Nino Cerruti, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren — has been talking about relaunching the house.

Thanks to new clients in Russia and China, couture is one of the few industries to buck the recession and the brand is ripe for expansion. In future there will be bags, gloves, homeware and jewellery. McCarthy hints that a big British designer is interested in doing the menswear.

“It's inclusive luxury,” he boasts. “We have hundred-million-dollar businesses that want to collaborate.” Meanwhile a new version of Je Reviens will be relaunched in August at Harrods — part of its Perfume Diaries exhibition, celebrating the world's greatest fragrances.

Amongst the plethora of fashion trends for Summer 2010 you'll find the season's new take on military fashion. While heavily influenced by 20th Century army and air force styling, nautical influenced pieces have hardly got a look in. And I'm afraid I'm not here to change that. But for those fashioniser who are nautically inclined, this Summer still has something in store. Don't think of it as a nautical military trend, however. Rather, it's the navy and white colour palette, worn as dominant stripes.

The Style

Note that I didn't say bold stripes, but dominant stripes. While navy and white stripes are a must for the look, the real key to Summer's take on nautical stripes is that they dominate the outfit. While they do so in the above look easily (though the plum Doc Martens still seem somewhat heavy), in other outfits it's about drawing attention to the stripes above all else in the outfit.

As an illustration of the point be sure to look at the inspiration pictures below; while most looks rely on bold stripes, you'll see that the trend is just as effective when the stripes are thin. Hence for Summer 2010 look for dominant stripes, not necessarily bold ones.
The Pieces To Wear

Don't think of this Summer stripes just as a clothing trend: you can work them into any part of an outfit (just not all at once, please). As you'll see in the inspiration gallery stripes can dominate an outfit in everything from hats to killer mini-dresses.

To Nautical Or Not To Nautical?

While Summer's navy and white striped fashion trend isn't a true take on navy inspired fashion, it's likely to appeal to those who are in to the nautical aesthetic. If that's you and you're after some inspiration look to Anja Rubik's sailor inspiration from the June 2010 issue of Vogue Korea. The shoot utilises the season's stripe trend in the form of a dominant blazer, but takes the nautical motifs to far less subtle proportions.

Layering

The natural inclination for layering nautical pieces in an outfit is to do so with complimentary colours (read 'navy and white'). And I can't fault that logic. It's the easy option. But may I offer up one piece of inspiration that differs from the safe? Nataliya Piro in Cosmopolitan magazine mixing (admittedly non-dominant) stripes with floral prints. The stripes don't dominate, but in a crowded room the look certainly will.

Brazil's prosperity bursts forth on catwalk

Brazil kicked off Latin America's premier fashion event, Sao Paulo Fashion Week, Wednesday, with parades showcasing its economic prosperity and optimism.

Brazil's designs for the 2010-2011 summer season -- including the inevitable sexy bikinis -- are sashaying down the catwalks daily to next Monday under the overarching theme "Anima" ("animated" or "lively" in Portuguese).

"We're a young country, a young culture, with an enormous potential for growth, for development," organizer Paulo Borges told reporters ahead of the first shows.

Gisele Bundchen, the Brazilian beauty who has become the world's top-paid model, will Sunday be making her first catwalk show since giving birth to a baby four months ago with her husband, US football player Tom Brady.

The Sao Paulo Fashion Week this year trains the spotlight on Brazilians' obsession with brand names and stylish clothes, underpinning a 50-billion-dollar fashion market that is becoming one of the most profitable in the world for the big luxury groups.

It also confirms Brazil's growing economic power.

Latin America's biggest economy, ranked 10th in the world, is currently expanding at nine percent on an annual basis -- almost as much as the global champion China.

A leading consulting firm specializing in Brazil's luxury market, MCF Consultoria, said the sector expanded 11.5 percent last year, when much of the rest of the world was tightening its belts in the global downturn, and could grow more than 17 percent this year.

"Brazilians love to shop," the firm's director, Carlos Ferreirinha, told AFP.

"In Brazil, people will spend what they do not have. Spending in Brazil is much higher than any discretionary money capability," he said.

He explained that shops regularly allow customers to pay off items in monthly instalments, interest free.

That, and the soaring value of Brazil's currency, the real, have pushed spending on imported goods denominated in dollars or euros to a record level.

French label Louis Vuitton, whose handbags grace the arm of almost every woman in Sao Paulo's rich Jardins neighbourhood, has done very well from the trend, winning brand-recognition with 23 percent of Brazilian consumers, according to a survey conducted by MCF Consultoria.

Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Dior and Gucci also have big profiles.

Brazilians are fashion snobs, insisting on wearing the very latest collections from Europe, Ferreirinha explained.

"They want to give the impression that they are very updated, very contemporary, and this is translated into impulsiveness," he said.

And there no immediate prospect of Brazil's gaping consumerist maw snapping shut any time soon, according to Ferreirinha.

"We're going to have at least 20 years more of very important growth. Brazil is still very much behind the development process that everybody believes we can have," he said, pointing to a nascent but rapidly growing middle class.

Americans prove world-beaters in tennis fashion show

America produced a French Open women's champion, but they're proving winners when it comes to turning heads with their wacky wardrobes.

Venus Williams appeared for her first-round match wearing a black, lacy outfit with red trimming, a plunging neckline and flesh-coloured underwear that kept photographers busy.

Many observers wondered whether the world number two had confused Roland Garros with the Moulin Rouge.

"The outfit is about illusion, and that's been a lot of my motif this year, illusion," explained the 30-year-old to mystified journalists, mainly men.

"These days I just have a lot of fun with my designs and designing and doing different things."

How many of these outfits does she bring to events?

"Probably about eight to 10. I do recycle. I'm not superstitious, but I bring enough just for the back-up plan."

Not to be outdone, sister Serena, the last American champion in Paris in 2002, once wore a black catsuit on court.

On her way to winning the Australian Open this year, the world number one donned a yellow dress with flesh-coloured underwear and said that she too was concentrating on 'illusions'.

"I just sketched it out. The whole idea is just about the illusion that I?m wearing a deep V-neck. Then the idea was to wear shorts that were like the same colour as my skin. It works very well, apparently," she said at the time.

But the Williams sisters have serious competition in the fashion stakes at the French Open in the shape of Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who once played at Wimbledon Centre Court wearing white football socks and a boob-tube.

She has also donned leopard print outfits while also once appearing with a cowboy hat, which cost her a 10,000-dollar fine from the authorities.

On Tuesday, Mattek-Sands played her first-round match at the French Open wearing a pink shirt, black skirt and knee-high black socks before springing to the defence of Venus Williams.

"She's got a lot of crap for it, but it makes tennis interesting," said Mattek-Sands.

"You can't say it's OK for Maria Sharapova but it's not OK for Venus.

"I think it's great. If you see two blonde-haired girls wearing the same outfits, it's really hard for the fans to tell them apart."

Mattek-Sands says she will be sticking to the socks for the rest of the year, but with different colours for different occasions.

She insists her style is becoming more conservative.

"Your dress often depends on which tournament you are in and who is the supervisor, some are more lenient than others," she said. "For a while I had to get all of my clothes approved."

Despite her colourful dress sense, offset by an extravagant tattoo on the inside of her right upper-arm, Mattek-Sands is married to an insurance executive.

Marc Jacobs took home the big prize as the top talent in womenswear at the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards Monday night, but the big moment on stage at Lincoln Center was Sarah Jessica Parker's tribute to the late Alexander McQueen.

Parker told a celebrity-studded crowd that included Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Biel and Rachel Weisz that it was with "honor and great regret" that she was there to mark the contribution and creativity the designer gave to his industry. "I would have loved to see what he would do next," she said.

Parker wore a purple-and-pink print gown from the pre-fall collection that she said was hand-selected for her by the house's new designer — and former McQueen assistant — Sarah Burton.

After her remarks, a parade of somber models presented McQueen's final fashion collection for the upcoming fall season, which was rooted in several heavily embroidered, dramatic styles topped by feather-mohawk headpieces.

The audience reserved its one standing ovation of the evening, however, for Michael Kors, who received a lifetime achievement award from Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Wintour, a friend of Kors for almost three decades, recalled several funny stories about the "Project Runway" judge who is known in fashion circles for his sunny disposition. The best one: On a vacation to Jamaica that had been mostly mired in rain, Kors headed straight for the ocean for a quick dip when the skies cleared. He ended up bobbing for hours in the water, though, because he realized — after it was too late — that Ralph Lauren was directly on the beach in front of him and Kors didn't want to be seen in his swimsuit.

Wintour also shared the tidbit that Kors is an aspiring Broadway producer.

Kors, who had brought Paltrow — who wore a one-shoulder, black beaded gown — as his date, said he was "blown away" when the CFDA called to tell him of his award: "I thought to myself, `I'm just a kid. How did this happen?'"

The CFDA devotes a good chunk of its annual awards, considered the top honors in American fashion, to its young, emerging talent. Winners of the Swarovski awards were Jason Wu, who designed Michelle Obama's inaugural gown, in the womenswear category, Richard Chai for menswear and Alexander Wang for accessories.

Wu arrived on the red carpet with Weisz, who wore one of his designs — a purple dress with photo-style floral print.

"Now that I've taken her here, maybe she'll take me to the Oscars," Wu said.

Jacobs is known as the U.S. leader in fashion trends, but he had a four-year losing streak going into the night and hadn't won the womenswear award since 1997. (He did win for accessory design in 1998, 2003 and 2005, for menswear in 2002, and the international award for his work at Louis Vuitton last year.)

Model-turned-cosmetics mogul Iman received the fashion-icon award, presented to her by longtime friend Isabella Rossellini. Wearing a custom-made, black strapless Giambattista Valli, Iman joked that now she could tell her rock star husband David Bowie, "Move over, you're not the only icon in the house."

40 graduates showed their work at the Central Saint Martins BA Degree Show this year, combining eccentric creativity with well-mastered skill. From wild African carnival-like ensembles, to upholstered outerwear, and from inflatable swimwear to paintbrush-shaped headwear…

Catwalks ranged from vibrant, quirky, carnival-like processions, to romantic, tailored, and intricate. Having been a bit out of the loop for the last year, to see such vast amounts of creativity under one roof was quite overwhelming, and equally inspiring. The show took place in Bethnal Green’s York Hall, which, for those of you who haven’t been, is rather a grand setting. Built in the 1920s, it’s vastly high ceilings and simple design creates a high-brow feel, and a lovely stage for CSM graduates.

Anne Karine Thorbjoernsen’s Womenswear collection set the scene with some illusory wicker-work creating wonderfully hazy silhouettes, highlighting the female form.

Eloise Jephson’s highly commended collection of elegant silk dresses, kimono-style gowns and turbans, printed with dinosaurs and magical creatures encapsulated wearability, originality and beauty.

Catapulting the show to new heights. Sorcha O Raghallaigh’s, also highly commended collection of models- on- stilts made for a show of towering, fabric laden models – bundled with crochet scarves and flowers, for dramatic effect. The last to grace the stage, a towering bride, exaggerating the typical white wedding, with a pale complexion and layers of sheer and knitted fabrics.

The Second Runner-Up Award went to Alex Mullins for his quirky, vibrant collection, which included inflatable puffa-style jackets, an eclectic range of head-dresses, from painted symbols and tools to hooded and toggled overcoats in rusty orange hues, and a whole lotta’ layering.

Philip Patterson, whose menswear collection was presented with First Runner-Up Award by Drusila Beyfus, showed a great, skillful collection, with Military influence, and a sense of the outback. Soft linens, neutral cottons and waxy leather combined for a laid-back, stylish collection.

Yi Fang Wan’s sumptuous collection of freshly draped cotton won her the L’Oreal Professional Young Designer of the Year Award. Delicious ivory and dusty pink layers created elegant, romantic silhouettes. Pretty collars, bubble-hem skirting and fabulous layering made this collection stand-out from the surrounding in-your-face flamboyance of the show.

Sabina Bryntesson’s worm-like piping weaved through skin tight tops and tube-dresses.
Helen Price’s dramatic knitwear was a treat for the eyes – huge ostrich-like topiary-desses swooped along the catwalk to Cornershop’s ‘Brimful of Asha’.

Moon-like cape cum cloche-hats designed by Liz Black were inventive and flattering. Splattered with pollock-esque ink splats and teamed with drain-pipe jeans.

Kwan Tae Kim showed metallics in all their glory. Spangly tailored jackets, armour-like spacesuits and mirrored embellishment combined, creating a Prince-esque style with some delicate feminine edging to soften the structured silhouettes.

Onez Lau showed inventive. comical knitwear. A model with antlers and an ‘Oh Deer’ knitted dress stalked by a show-horse wearing a wizards hat took to the catwalk, whilst others sported whipped hair-do’s and layers of woolen frivolity.

Tahari Roque’s tape-like swimwear ensembles came to life on stage, inflating into buoyant armbands and waistbands in turquoise and black.

Beautiful feathered millinery from Zoe Sherwood appeared as birds in stages of flight. Teamed with velour, chiffon and an earthy palette, exuding a pagan feel and creating a spirited show with beaded accessories, and peacock feather-printed outerwear.

Hiroko Nakajima took upholstered chairs and turned them into sweeping jackets, paintings became neck pieces and fabrics were used to create button-back effects over volumous velour outerwear.

Isabel Fishlock’s carnival-style collection showed swishing style, silk layers and appliqued flowers. Carrie Hill’s widow- twankie styled ladies with turbans and wicker bags showed refreshing colour combinations, whilst Zoe Cheng’s multi-coloured fabrics tied into oversized bows extended the carnival theme.

The winter season of 2009/ 2010 promises to be a fun and vibrant start to a wonderfully eccentric new year in men's fashion that will certainly push the aesthetic boundaries, especially with regards to colour, form, and patterning.
Wear Designer Jeans With Everything and Everything, Smart Casual

Smart casual has made an enormous comeback in recent years as men across the globe suit up in a fitted pair of designer jeans accompanied by a stylish sport jacket and screen printed tee. Designers such as Marc Ecko and 7 For All Mankind are benefiting a great deal from this trend, as are more fusion designers such as Etro.

In the winter season, smart casual can still be de rigeur! Jeans can be worn throughout the winter climate, though a variation of shade must occur (for example, wearing light-blue “summer” denim is still out of order) though light gray and black remain acceptable. Black dyed denim jeans are somewhat bettered by pinstriped or patterned (say, in a slight chevron pattern) cotton flat-front casual pants, however.

Screen printed t-shirts and band t-shirts have also skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, becoming appropriate attire for teens as well as for adults. Popular retail chains such as Bluenotes, Randy River, Urban Planet, American Eagle, Old Navy, and Aeropostale offer a variety of inexpensive screen printed shirts – the prevailing fashion suggestion being to choose high-contrast colours (black base with neon prints) for wear during the evening or during summer months.

Out With the Old Trends, In With the New Trends (The Return of the Hat)

A few things that come to mind immediately with regard to fashion trends that have outstayed their welcome include the skinny pant or skinny jean, the “Kanye West” slotted shades, large, crunky jewelry (being replaced by sleek, modern looking equivalents), and the extra-long polo shirt.

One item that has become very much in vogue, and will see continued success in 2009 / 2010 is the men's hat – particularly the fedora, newsboy, and Kangol caps. Commonly offered in pinstriped patterns as well as embroidered with various characters such as skulls and script, hats are once again fashionable and can be worn by men from all walks of life – a much needed juxtaposition of traditional sensibilities and modern panache.

Our last Style Challenge was our toughest yet, so this time around we thought we’d go easy on you and just have some FUN. Nautical-style stripes tend to come around every Spring/Summer, so we’d hesitate to call them a “trend”, but there are a lot more of them in stores this year than usual, so this should hopefully be a really easy one: the challenge, however, will be in trying to come up with something different from everyone else!

The item we’ve chosen for this challenge is technically a dress, but we reckon it could easily pass as a top, too, so it should give you a bit of extra versatility.

Men's Spring/Summer 2009 shorts

A few short years ago tailored shorts for men were bang-on-trend; we were moving firmly away from the 1990s and a refined cut of short promised a comfy, distinguished, yet wholly less casual look. They didn't make it big everywhere, a bugger to find in Australia I ventured off to Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge for my navy pair from Paul Smith and they've worn beautifully. But for the gent wanting an updated look for their Spring/Summer 2009 wardrobe where to from here?

Tailored shorts certainly aren't out; they're yet to reach their peak in fact particularly when you consider the slow take-up of short suits by men. But if you're looking for something a little less straight, and something that shows some flair how about the above to pair of shorts?

Some will say the pair on the left takes its inspiration from the women's 'harem pants' fashion trend. While the pair certainly has a 'British man in the East' feel to them, Unconditional's Drop Crotch Pleated Short are most likely going to end up in a street infused wardrobe and worn with a bevy other black pieces.

The stand out pair for the season seems to be the Unconditional's Wrap Shorts in cotton twill (pictured above, right). Cuffed and breaking above the knee they are decidedly fashion forwards, but the wrap front gives them a casual edge that doesn't come across as evoking the 'harem' trend as strongly as the drop crotch pair.

The key to these two pairs of shorts, apart from their cotton/metallic blend, is that they both obey the modern rules of men's shorts or, rather, they don't transgress into the realm of things to avoid.

Men's Military Trend 2009-2010-Fashion in Combat

The military shape always has been a fashion driven trend for the colder months; but for Autumn (Fall)/Winter 2009-2010 designers such as Gareth Pugh, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Burberry have modified and transformed the combat uniform from the past to the now. Gareth Pugh, with one of the most unusual menswear collections for A/W 09-10 has brought inspiration from the likes of German officer overcoats from the Second World War to the metal chain mail suits that were worn under suits of armour.

Movies can also be seen as a heavy influence in Pugh's A/W collection with feathers for shoulder decoration as inspiration from The Crow including the Gothic ripped trousers and black boots and the metallic body combat suit, a similar cut to Christian Bale's costume in Equilibrium.

Men's fashion trend military 2010

Men's military fashion trend is nothing new to us. Revived in 2008/2009 as part of a larger 1980s revival it had, to date, the flamboyant style popularised by the likes of Adam Ant. Not so for Autumn (Fall) / 2010. Ant, in turn, had taken his inspiration from a time when the European superpowers were at their peak, and military uniforms were less about functionality and more about how grand your country was.

The 1980s fashion revival is, however, on the wane. A new decade calls for a new swatch, and the focus on subtlety and quality that I hope will shape the next decade of men's fashion will see the men's military trend evolve in 2010 to be far more articulate.

So if the inspiration no longer comes from the 1980s, then when? The Second World War. An era of rationing, clean cuts, functionality, and, of course, the dapper gentleman off to fight for King and Country.

Fashion Designer by Anne Klein

Born Hannah Golofski in August 1923, Anne Klein is a native New Yorker who started her career as a sketcher and then later became a prominent designer of womens apparel and sportswear. She is considered by some top designers as the woman who defined how American sportswear are sold and worn nowadays.

She co-founded Junior Sophisticates in 1948 with husband Ben Klein. The "Junior" line was made popular with her treatment of junior sizes for young women. Before 1948, "Juniors" was only known as an extension of clothes for young children. What the industry did not recognize was that teens had a different fashion sense compared to the 12-year-old-and-under age group. "Junior" had a more sophisticated touch to their clothes and leaned towards adult fashion. This helped introduce such market segment among designers.

In 1968, she established Anne Klein & Co. and Ann Klein Studio with second husband Matthew Rubinstein. Both companies had the goal of designing and marketing sportswear as separate apparels. The modern concept of American sportswear was introduced through her collection of mix-and matched wardrobe, which consisted of constructed jackets, pants and other related pieces. This made the company an overnight industrial success.

Her clothes in general were characterized as smart, practical and very stylish. Anne Klein created clothes that were easily recognized for their sophistication and wearability. Her sportswear collection included hooded blouse tops and jersey dresses, blazers and battle jackets.

In addition to designing, Anne Klein was also responsible for inventing several popular pieces used in the clothing industry. In 1967, she modified a girdle that was specifically designed for those wearing mini skirts.

As the company progressed, it achieved an impressive growth and also received prestigious honors. Having won two Coty Awards, Anne Klein was later on named to the Coty Hall of Fame in 1971. Also, she was the only designer to be presented twice with the Neiman-Marcus Award for fashion leadership. She also took part in a special fashion show in Versailles, France in 1973 that helped raise funds for the palace. She was joined by other leading designers in the fashion world like Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass, and also French designers Yves St. Laurent, Dior, and Givenchy, among others.

Amidst her success, Anne Klein suffered from breast cancer and died unexpectedly at a young age of 51 in early 1974. Donna Karan, who worked at her firm during that time, continued on her label, taking over the design aspect of the company even after her death. Many other designers have also worked for the house of Anne Klein. These included Richard Tyler, Patrick Robinson, and Charles Nolan.

Through the years, the house somewhat struggled in part with keeping the legacy of its founder. The past seasons have been marked with a lack of a strong brand identity. Recently, in 2007, the company tried to recover its designer status and sought the help of Isabel Toledo. The Cuban designer was tasked with reviving the celebrated brand name, by translating the American classic with her signature artsy and avant-garde collection. Thus giving a new twist to the classic style of Anne Klein.

I guess designing t-shirts appeals to me as it is such a pure medium. From my point of view, as a vehicle for carrying artwork, the tee is like a pure white blank canvas: its hard to imagine how it could be made less fussy or more efficient at what it does. I wonder if the t-shirt will still be around in 100, 500, 1000 years. The blank canvas probably will be. Maybe more of us will be wearing unique designs in the future, and the boundaries between art, design and the clothing will become less clear.

The other reason I’m becoming increasingly keen to design some good shirts is that it is a way for just about anyone who likes my work to own and enjoy it on a personal level. I’d get more of a kick from going to a big city and seeing a stranger wearing one of my t-shirts than going into a big commercial gallery and seeing my art on the wall. Its still a very, very slim percentage of individuals who every set foot in a commercial gallery. Nearly all of us however enjoy wearing a t-shirts on a regular basis regardless of our demographic. In a sense it is one of societies levelers: the fact that we can all gain access to unique and inspiring t-shirts and make a statement with design.

QUT – Fashion Design Graduate Show 2006

The fashion highlight this week in Brisbane, was the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Fashion Design Graduate Show. I attended the second show of three, which was a packed house at QUT’s creative industries precinct in “The Block” at Kelvin Grove. The events started on November 22 and conclude on the 24th. This event is a showcase of the work of students from the only Fashion degree in QLD. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Fashion) program has had great success over the years where some students having gone on to win renowned competitions nationally and internationally.
There was a combination of Womenswear, Menswear and Swimwear on show. The highlight for me in terms of presentation was the Oliver Twist theme shown by one of the students, where the models/actors put on a bit of a show for the audience.

I got myself a cosy spot at the back left in front of the catwalk, where I was shooting from an elevated position to try and shoot over the heads of those in the front row. Once again I shot without a flash, using an 85mm on Canon 20D. This gave me an effective reach of about 136mm which was ideal. The down lights over the stage caused some shadow to occur in the model’s eye sockets. Not much I can do about this besides use a flash, which I rarely want to do. There were a few models working that night I had done photoshoots with, they included Kristin Parkinson (whom also modelled at the Swimwear from Oz launch party), Diana Rodriquez and Carmen James, all of who are part of the Vivien’s Models agency.
